4 ways to travel from the lake to the mountains
Esino Lario (914m) sits above Varenna on Lake Como's eastern shore. There are three ways to get here — on foot along historic mule tracks, by bus, or by car. The village is just 30 minutes from Varenna by road, making it a perfect day trip or base for exploring the Grigna mountains.
🥾 On foot — Historic Mule Tracks (recommended): The 6.5km cobblestone path from Varenna (550m elevation gain, ~2h30') is the most scenic option. Start at Varenna-Esino-Perledo train station and follow CAI trail signs to Esino Lario. Return by bus.
🚌 By bus — SP62 (easiest): Bus SP62 runs from Varenna Ferroviaria to Esino Lario in ~30 minutes. Operates mainly in summer and on weekends. Check timetables at sptlecco.it. Fare: approx. €2.50.
🚗 By car: Follow SP62 from Varenna (15 min). Free parking available at Piazza Municipio and along the main streets. The road is narrow in sections — drive carefully.
