The panoramic balcony of the Grigna

Alpe Cainallo is the alpine plateau above Esino Lario that offers one of the finest views over the entire Lake Como and the Grigna peaks. Just 30 minutes by road from Esino (914m), you climb a further 450 metres to find a completely different world: ski slopes in winter, trails and MTB routes in summer, and a panorama stretching from Lake Como to the central Alps.

This is not a mass-tourism destination — and that is precisely its appeal. Those who make it here find space, silence and the authentic nature of the Lombard Prealps, with the lake glittering below and the limestone rocks of the Grigna rising overhead.

Skiing at Alpe Cainallo

Alpe Cainallo is the ski resort closest to Lake Como. It is not Cortina — but it is authentic, accessible and queue-free. The slopes run between 1,350m and approximately 1,750m, with ski lifts (chairlift + ski tow) and conditions that allow skiing from December to March in most years.

A little-known advantage: even when the major Lombard ski resorts are overwhelmed at weekends, Cainallo stays relaxed. And in the evening you descend to Esino Lario, where the Ristoro serves polenta taragna and game at true mountain prices.

MTB and trekking at Cainallo

In summer Alpe Cainallo transforms. The ski slopes become flowering pastures, the trails open up for hikers and mountain bikers, and the panorama — already spectacular in winter — gains colour. From the Cainallo plateau you enjoy a 360° view stretching from Lake Como to the Alpine peaks.

The MTB routes start from Esino Lario or directly from the plateau: a series of singletrack trails, forest roads and descents that connect with the 22km cycling circuit the municipality has just opened in the village.

Frequently asked questions — Alpe Cainallo

How do I get to Alpe Cainallo from Esino Lario?
Alpe Cainallo is reached by car via the road that climbs from Esino Lario (approximately 8km, 25–30 minutes). The road is tarmacked but narrow, with some tight hairpin bends: in winter winter equipment is mandatory (snow chains or winter tyres). In summer the route can also be done by MTB or on foot (CAI trail, approximately 1h30' from Esino, +450m elevation gain).
When is skiing open at Alpe Cainallo?
The typical ski season runs from December to March, depending on snow conditions. The north-east aspect of the plateau favours natural snowfall. It is always advisable to check conditions on official channels or call the hut directly before heading up. In dry years the season may be shorter.
Can I rent ski equipment or a mountain bike?
Ski equipment rental is available in the village of Esino Lario. For mountain bikes — especially e-bikes — rental is available at Ristoro Esino Lario (+39 0341 800100), which is also the main information point for trail routes.
Is there skiing near Lake Como?
Yes! Alpe Cainallo above Esino Lario is the closest ski resort to Lake Como — about 40 minutes from Varenna by bus + car. It's a small but genuine mountain ski area with runs from beginner to advanced, with spectacular views of Lake Como and the Grigna massif.
Is Cainallo suitable for families with young children?
Absolutely yes. In winter the ski school area with a carpet lift is perfect for young beginners, and the green slopes are safe. In summer the plateau offers wide open green spaces, a picnic area and the baita for refreshments. Grazing animals (cows and goats) are an added delight for children.
Can I use Alpe Cainallo as a base to climb the Grigna?
Yes, it's an excellent idea especially for those staying in the area. From Cainallo (1,350m) the trail to Bocchetta di Prada (1,950m) and then the summit of Grigna Settentrionale (2,409m) involves less total elevation gain compared to starting from Esino (914m). Recommended for those who want to tackle the Grigna at a more relaxed pace. Difficulty: EE (experienced hikers).
Is there somewhere to eat at Cainallo?
Yes, the Baita Alpe Cainallo serves food and drinks during both the ski season and summer (mainly at weekends). It offers traditional Lombard dishes and spectacular views. It is advisable to call ahead to check opening, especially during transitional periods between seasons.
