The best e-bike ride above Lake Como — Esino Lario

Esino Lario has just completed a brand-new 22km cycling circuit at 914m above sea level — one of the most scenic cycling routes above Lake Como. The loop winds through alpine meadows, chestnut and conifer forests, historic farmsteads and ridge-top viewpoints with the famous blue lake always in sight below.

Perfect for visitors arriving from Varenna: take the train to Varenna-Esino station, hop on the SP62 bus (30 min, €2.50), pick up your e-bike rental at Ristoro Esino Lario, and start pedalling. The electric assistance makes the route accessible to all fitness levels. In the morning you can hike up on the historic mule tracks from Varenna — and spend the afternoon exploring the 22km circuit on two wheels. Rental e-bikes are available at Ristoro Esino Lario, Via Bigallo 2. Book ahead for weekends: +39 335 292220.

The route

The 22km circuit — stages and highlights

The Esino Lario cycling circuit is a 22km loop that starts and ends in the village centre. The route is waymarked with information panels from the Comune and combines paved sections (approximately 60%) with compact gravel tracks (40%). Total elevation gain is approximately 420 metres up and the same down, distributed progressively. Altitude ranges between 914m and 1,400m a.s.l., with the highest points reached on the traverse towards Alpe Cainallo.

Road surface is in good condition for almost the entire route. Some gravel sections through the woods can have small rough patches after heavy rain. A tyre with a minimum of tread is recommended. The electric assist makes it unnecessary to be a trained cyclist: the steeper uphill sections can be tackled without excessive effort even for those who rarely ride.

Start · Village centre
Esino Lario centre → Loc. Ortanella
The ride begins at Ristoro Esino Lario on Via Bigallo, the heart of the village. The first 3 kilometres head east on a gently climbing paved road through pastures and gardens. The first views of Lake Como open up after just a few hundred metres. You pass the village cemetery and continue towards Ortanella, where the most scenic stretch of the circuit begins. The air is fresh and smells of alpine grass even in July and August.

Climb · Forest and pastures
Ortanella → Alpe Cainallo (1,400 m)
The most demanding stage in terms of elevation. You climb towards Alpe Cainallo through a mixed beech and fir forest. The ascent gains approximately 350 metres over 5 kilometres of gravel track. At Cainallo — the highest point of the loop at around 1,400m a.s.l. — one of the most dramatic views in the entire Lake Como area opens up: the Grigna Settentrionale soars to the north while below stretches the Lecco arm of the lake. Perfect spot for a photo stop.

Traverse · Lake panorama
Cainallo → Panoramic ridge → Fraz. Conceno
The most scenic traverse of the circuit: you ride along the panoramic ridge with Lake Como always visible on the right and the Grigna Settentrionale on the left. The section is mixed — compact track and gravel road — with a few short slightly technical stretches on exposed rock. The view over the Lecco arm of the lake, with Varenna visible below and the Valsassina behind, is among the most spectacular in Lombardy. Refreshment stop: Rifugio Cainallo.

Descent · Chestnut groves and meadows
Conceno → Esino Inferiore (Psciac)
From the Conceno viewpoint you descend through historic chestnut groves towards Esino Inferiore, the oldest part of the village known locally as Psciac. The road is paved with some bends: views over the opposite slope towards Val Varrone and the Valtellina mountains. You pass the lavatoio di San Giovanni, a characteristic historic stone drinking trough. This stretch is relaxing and requires little effort — perfect for catching your breath after the ridge traverse.

Return · Dedicated cycle path
Esino Inferiore → Esino Lario centre
The final 3 kilometres link Esino Inferiore to the centre on a dedicated paved cycle path — the most recently completed section, finished with the Comune's latest works. You ride comfortably between grey stone houses and terraced gardens. Back in the village square, you can return the bike to the Ristoro and end the day with lunch or an aperitivo at one of the village's establishments.

The complete circuit takes 2.5 – 4 hours by e-bike depending on pace and stops. Those who want only the scenic section (stages 2–3) can opt for the shorter circuit of approximately 11km, ideal for families or those with less time. The route is accessible from April to October; in spring above 1,000m there may be residual snow on some gravel sections.

Frequently asked questions

FAQ — E-bike Esino Lario

ENWhere can I rent an e-bike in Esino Lario?
E-bike rental is managed by Ristoro Esino Lario, at Via Bigallo 2 in the village centre. This is the same place where you can have lunch before setting off on the circuit — convenient and practical. The phone number for booking is +39 335 292220. Booking is recommended especially at weekends and during July and August when demand is highest. The Ristoro is open mainly from April to October, with hours concentrated at weekends and on public holidays.
ENIs the e-bike circuit suitable for beginners?
Yes, absolutely. The Easy–Moderate rating takes into account the electric pedal assist, which makes the uphill sections far more accessible than on a traditional bike. The surface is mainly paved or compact gravel. The most demanding sections (stage 2, climb to Cainallo) become very manageable with the electric assist. A helmet is recommended. No specific mountain biking experience is required.
ENHow far is the e-bike circuit from Varenna?
Esino Lario is 30 minutes above Varenna by bus (line SP62, €2.50). From Varenna train station, the bus departs from the piazza in front of the station. The 22km e-bike circuit starts and ends in Esino Lario village. A perfect day trip from Varenna: take the morning bus up, rent an e-bike, ride the circuit, and take the bus back in the evening. Alternatively, walk up on the historic mule tracks (2h30') and ride back down to Varenna on the road (optional, about 12km of descent).
ENWhen is the e-bike rental open?
The e-bike rental at Ristoro Esino Lario is active from April to October, with availability mainly at weekends (Saturday, Sunday) and on public holidays. During peak periods (July–August) the service may also be available on weekdays, but it is always worth checking by calling +39 335 292220. Out of season (November–March) the service is suspended due to adverse weather conditions at altitude.
ENCan I bring my own e-bike to Esino Lario?
Yes, you can. By car you can drive to Esino Lario on the SP62 from Varenna (mountain road, 20 min): there is free parking in the village. By train you can bring your bike with a separate ticket as far as Varenna, but you then need to ascend the 550m to reach Esino — feasible but demanding. By SP62 bus folding or disassembled bikes are allowed; a full-size bike is only possible if there is space in the luggage compartment (not guaranteed). It is worth calling the bus operator to check.
