The Ecomuseo delle Grigne celebrates the relationship between people and the mountain in the territory of Esino Lario and the Valsassina valley. Its mission is to collect, preserve and promote the material, intangible and landscape heritage of its territory in partnership with the local community.
How the Ecomuseum came to be
Founded in 2008 by the Municipality of Esino Lario and on the initiative of the Associazione Amici del Museo delle Grigne Onlus. In 2008, to establish the Ecomuseum, Cristina Perillo was appointed coordinator and a survey was launched of the activities that had contributed to preserving, promoting and interpreting the heritage of the territory.
It became clear that for many years the community had been active through its numerous associations and groups in promoting and protecting local heritage. In 2009 the formal membership of associations, groups and local businesses was established, and the programme took on a more precise structure. In the same year the Ecomuseo delle Grigne was officially recognised by the Lombardy Region.
What the Ecomuseum does
Ecomuseum and Museo delle Grigne: one shared identity
The Ecomuseo delle Grigne and the Museo delle Grigne of Villa Clotilde are complementary: while the Museum houses the natural history collections (Triassic fossils, minerals, alpine fauna), the Ecomuseum looks after the cultural and human heritage of the territory.
Together they represent a complete instrument for understanding Esino Lario: geology and nature on one side, history and human traditions on the other. Both are managed with the direct involvement of the local community, through the Associazione Amici del Museo delle Grigne ODV and the other associations of the village.
Ecomuseo delle Grigne
The Ecomuseo delle Grigne (Ecomuseum of the Grigne Mountains) was founded in 2008 by the Municipality of Esino Lario and the Friends of the Museo delle Grigne Association. Its mission is to document, preserve, and promote the material, intangible, and landscape heritage of the Esino Lario area and the broader Valsassina valley.
The ecomuseum places special emphasis on families and children, offering educational workshops, guided walks along historic mule tracks, and discovery trails through the alpine landscape above Lake Como. Recognized by the Lombardy Region in 2009, it won the FamigliaLavoro Prize from the Catholic University of Milan for its child-friendly approach to cultural heritage.
